Mystery of the Witches' Bridge (Originally

This book has all the stuff to make a great story. Spooky atmosphere, a past no one will talk about, an unresolved feud, strange things happening and violin music coming out of the fog. Add unexplained lights flashing a message from a ghost (?) who knows his name, secret friends, a misunderstood but loyal one man dog and what more could you want? The story starts with young Dan Pride arriving to live with his rather reclusive and less than forthcoming uncle. Dan explores the eerie surrounding area at all times of the day and night and in all kinds of gloomy weather. He discovers a secret place long forgotten that goes a long way towards explaining the overall mystery. He makes some friends who say it's best if he not mention them and seem able to vanish quickly when necessary. A detailed and relatively long Scholastic book that oozes atmosphere while Dan and his friends do a great job of solving past mysteries and resolving old wrongs in spite of real danger and interference from things like parents, uncles, unfriendly townsfolk, bed time, chores, etc.
