The mystery of the third parrot

While riding the train, psychology professor Carney observes the emotional state of a fellow rider while passing an apartment with a parrot perched in a window and decides that a crime has been committed. Seeking out the apartment, Carney discovers three parrots and a dead body, and is thrown into an adventure involving lost Russian jewels and a bitter rivalry for a beautiful refugee.
