Wendy (Mao Remix)

The Tokyo that stays at the edge of the frame

No ratings yet

Tokyo, from dusk into night. The camera moves inside the flow of the city and picks up its smaller details: unfamiliar faces, gestures repeated every day, bodies crossing pavements and intersections, the light shifting as the day ends and the signs come on. There is no story to follow and no characters to recognise. Nicolas Fransolet proceeds by accumulating observations, in the form of a reportage: what holds the images together is the rhythm of the track and the quality of the gaze, attentive to what usually goes unnoticed. What emerges is the portrait of a place at once far away and familiar, where the vast scale of the metropolis and the smallness of individual gestures inhabit the same image − the same oscillation between distance and proximity that runs through Mao’s electronic reworking of Delta V’s “Wendy”.
