The stories stars Han Fei, a student of the Confucius school and a prince of the Han Kingdom, traveling back to his homeland. During his stay, he meets up with Zhang Liang, Wei Zhuang, and Zinu. Together, they create Quicksand, a group dedicated to wrestling back control of the Han Kingdom from its top general, Ji Wuye. However, many other forces are conspiring over control of the Han, and the situation becomes more and more complex.
