Major Zherekhov is an experienced operative and the head of the police department in Murom. He has a wife and a 10-year-old daughter: his wife dreams of moving to Moscow, but Zherekhov is against it. On this basis, conflicts often arise in the family: if it were not for the daughter, they would have divorced a long time ago. In addition, he has a secret affair with Investigator Ivolgina. It is she who, in her spare time, investigates a case that, according to Zherekhov, does not exist. Ivolgina is convinced that the five girls who disappeared in different areas of the Vladimir region are victims of a serial killer: all, plus or minus, of the same age and build. She insists that a case should be opened, but Zherekhov is categorically against it – there are no bodies or evidence. But Ivolgina does not back down and continues to pursue this case, which she calls the "Invisible Man's case" in private. Only after a series of events in the service and in his personal life and the death of a loved one, Zherekhov realizes that the Ivolgina case is the real thing, and a serial killer is operating in the region.
