It's spring in Moscow. The May Day celebrations have just ended, and the country is still reeling from one holiday, preparing for the next – Victory Day. Everyone is in a state of bliss and tranquility, awaiting the warm summer. Only the post office is working hard – letters, cards, newspapers, packages, and parcels are arriving in an endless stream. There aren't enough people, everyone is exhausted, tired, and irritated. The protagonist, a simple postal worker named Gerasim, is also running around like a squirrel in a wheel. Five years ago, he lost his brother, and with him, any hope for justice in this life. One day, one of the old ladies he delivered mail to is murdered. Gerasim begins his own investigation, during which he meets Nastya, a modest girl who becomes both a loyal assistant and a lover. But then, prosecutor Bizyak stands in our heroes' way. The indefatigable postman sticks his nose into everything, for which the law enforcement officer punishes him by jailing him for a while. Some time later, Gerasim is promoted at work, but he asks to postpone his "career advancement" while the investigation continues.
